Sensei Richard Muhs was born in Rochester, NY in 1965. He began his Isshin-Ryu karate training in 1982 under Sensei Bailey Russell while attending a class at the Cecil Community college. Sensei’s Muhs was impressed with the snapping front kick of Sensei Russell and his karate/bouncer stories. Sensei Muhs obtained his Sho-Dan (1st degree) black belt in December 1990. He currently has a Go-Dan (5th degree) black belt rank.
Sensei Muhs currently works for Siemens Building Industries as a Project Manager for building controls (HVAC, Fire, Security) for various different building types. Office buildings, Schools, pharmaceutical manufactures, and Airports are a few examples.
Sensei Muhs started in 1991 teaching at the Allentown Racquet and fitness clubs for the next 8 years. Following that at his Hamilton Street dojo for almost 2 years. Sensei Muhs’ also began teaching at Lehigh Carbon Community College in 2000 through to today. He taught at Allentown Gold’s Gym Lehigh Street from 2001- 2004.
When asked of his favorite memory and advice for current kyu ranks. He replied:
“One of many – my first Black belt I promoted is still with me after 20 years – Steve Dawson.
Don’t worry about how you’re progressing, we all started at the same place and very few of us finish or stay or continue the journey until we can go no farther.”
