On July 18, 2020, a new milestone was reached within the Order of Isshin-Ryu. Our first Virtual Shiai! Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s Summer Shiai was held in a Zoom Meeting format. There are too many people to thank for sacrificing their time to put together this opportunity, but they put together an outstanding event.
The Shiai included about 25 participants, including many different ranks and members from all over the United States. Kyu rank students performed empty hand and weapons katas before a board of Black Belts. Then, Black Belts performed empty hand and weapons katas before a different Black Belt board.
Following Kata performances, Grandmaster Cooling gave us some thoughts and reflection on what we had accomplished with the Virtual Shiai and Virtual Classes over the last few months. It has worked well the way we have ‘adjusted our sails’!
A week prior to the Virtual Shiai, the Order of Isshin-Ryu also had a first with Virtual Evaluations. Several Kyu Ranks and Black Belts were evaluated by Zoom Meeting for their promotions. The format worked well and all of the following promotions were recognized:
Sensei Ken Varney – Yon Dan
Mark Harrison – Sho Dan
Alex Irwin – Ni Kyu
John Hyman – Ni Kyu
Noah Gough – Yon Kyu
Congratulations to everyone on their promotions!
